What is the “fluidic approach to fascia”?

In this course we almost completely ignore the fibres as they cannot be stretched manually unless they are firmly held and held for a very long period of time.
It will be shown through actual dissections on animal tissue that when a stretching force is placed on collagen fibres they do not stretch, rather they are distorted and thus they appear to have stretched. In fact there is no net change in length.

Instead the fluid within the connective tissue is addressed and in particular the loose connective tissue where the majority of the fluid is maintained as extracellular matrix.

How is the fluidic approach different from other fascial courses?

Unlike other courses where the emphasis is placed on the continuity of connective tissue – this course focuses on its contiguity. Whereas the continuity of fibres has a longitudinal emphasis – fascia contiguity is a layered approach from superficial to deep.

Think of the problem of pain or immobility not being a problem of length but rather a problem of one layer not being able to move or react in relationship with its over lying or under lying layer. These contiguous problems arise following prolonged immobilization—such as casting or bracing, or bed rest, following injury—especially where there was heavy bruising, or following repeated inflammation—such as in tendonitis conditions. In these cases longitudinal, stretching or a crossed hands release approach will have little effect.

What is the goal of the fluidic approach to fascia?

The course presents considerable theory so that the participant is able to realize and appreciate the scientific merit of working with the fluid component of connective tissue rather than struggling with its fibres.

Participants will realize that hundreds of years of rote teaching along with anatomy books which do not depict connective tissue’s fluid, matrix and cellular components, have given us a completely false sense of what fascia looks like and more importantly how it behaves and reacts to treatment.

High resolution pictures of fresh animal connective tissue (dense and loose), dissected by Jane, augment the need to view fascia from a differing perspective--that of fluid. Embryological development of connective tissue along with its histological features and wave mechanics, round out the lecture portion of the program.

The hands on approach is light and subtle. Jane puts her hands on each person so that they are able to feel the difference between a fibrous approach and a fluidic approach.

Many participants will experience that by working with the fluid within the connective tissue that emotional reactions may be invoked. In many cases it will be noted that these unintentional reactions play an important role as to why the dysfunctional region may have been resistant to other forms of treatment.

What is the format of the course?

Most of day one is lecture based: How we have come to think of fascia as being fibrous. Discussion centres around how embryologically, connective tissue develops from a fluid and how collagen fibres are the last elements of connective tissue to be formed. It is repeated multiple times that without the presence of fluid, connective tissue simply disintegrates and that stretching is futile.

Jane gives you the opportunity to develop a finer sense of palpation as she allows you to perceive fascia on an individual basis rather than telling you how it should feel. Armed with this skill she then takes you through a series of techniques which employ a fluid approach to the assessment and treatment of connective tissue. Techniques shown can be applied anywhere in the body – depending upon the participants’ knowledge of anatomy and their confidence in their palpatory ability.

During day 2, the anatomical regions emphasized are the Ilio-tibial tract, the shoulder, the inguinal ligament.

Day 3 focuses on the simple ways to improve and maintain posture using a fluid approach to the treatment of fascia.

Do participants receive supplementary course material?

Participants will receive a small handout but in fact the material is so well explained and so deeply assimilated that all one needs to remember upon leaving is to “Go with the Flow”.

Approaches to treatment will be very well explained and plenty of opportunity will be given to practice them, so that their application is well integrated into the participants’ memory.

All participants will receive a certificate upon completion of the course to use towards CEU's for your respective disciplines.
